In their Viewpoints article, Tim and Don review the findings of a 2014 report from the Office of Inspector General (OIG) questioning pharmaceutical manufacturers’ safeguards to prevent co-pay card use in federally funded programs. The article discusses strategic reasons pharmaceutical manufacturers implement co-pay card programs and actions that manufacturers and pharmacies can take to prevent the use of co-pay cards for Medicare Part D beneficiaries.

PHSI Consultants Ann Johnson and Melissa Krause contributed to the July/August 2014 edition of ComputerTalk for the Pharmacist. In their Viewpoints article, Ann and Melissa provide a review of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act). They specifically discuss two emerging areas that provide a threat to privacy, which are pharmacy apps and pharmacist-patient interactions outside of the pharmacy counter.
